Not such a great name, but a great product

Sandberg has created a really ingenious gadget for iPhone speakers but has had some trouble finding a name for it. The tiny unit enables you to use the speakers wirelessly, as well as being able to use them for any other device in addition to the iPhone and iPod for which it is designed.

An iPhone speaker like this is called a “Speaker Dock”. Basically you place the little gadget from Sandberg over the iPhone socket on the speaker itself. This widget contains a Bluetooth link – enabling the wireless transfer of data, in this case sound.

So once you have placed this new Sandberg product on your Speaker Dock instead of slotting in your iPhone or iPod, you can then use the speaker for any devices that use Bluetooth. That of course includes iPhones and iPods, but also other mobile phones, MP3 players, laptops, tablets, PlayStations, etc.

This also means that you can keep your iPhone on you and select music tracks from it without physically placing it in the speaker itself. Which also makes it a bit easier to answer your phone when it rings.

But what is the best name for this kind of gadget? Managing Director Martin Hollerup, who himself was involved in the process, says: “We put a lot of effort into coming up with descriptive product names, so that you know what a product is about just by looking at the name. But there is a 30-character limit in the system, which obviously restricts our options slightly.”

He continues: “‘Bluetooth Hood’, ‘iPhone Dock Plug Blocker’ and ‘Speaker Dock Extender’ are some of the more creative suggestions we considered, but were slightly too vague. At the more fun end of the spectrum, we also considered suggestions like ‘The Dock Doctor’. We went through the various combinations of the function words ‘Speaker Dock’, ‘Link’, ‘Bluetooth’, ‘Extender’, ‘Wireless’, etc. And we finally settled on calling it the ‘Bluetooth Link for iPhone Dock’.”

We ask Hollerup if he thinks it is a good name. “No”, he replies, without hesitation. “It only really works if you remember to read the words ‘iPhone’ and ‘Dock’ as one element. But out of the many options we looked it, this solution described the product best. It is amazing that a product with such a simple and powerful function is so difficult to describe briefly and precisely.”

Sandberg Bluetooth Link for iPhone Dock (yes, that’s what it ended up being called) is on its way into the stores now. To find your nearest dealer or order online, go to www.sandberg.world.
