In Sandberg’s development department, we’ve realised that using the latest technology is not enough – the products must also be functionally fit for purpose.
A good example is the new USB 3.0 standard. Throughout 2011 the market has practically been flooded with products supporting this new standard. And it’s no surprise – the standard is incredibly powerful and lightning quick.
In the beginning it was enough for a manufacturer to be able to say “Hey, we’ve come up with a new product which supports the brand new standard. Which is faster than the old one.” But that’s no longer enough. That sort of argument only lasts for a very short time.
In the IT industry, brand new standards very rapidly become the established standard and this causes users to switch their focus away from the novelty value of the technology. This means that attention moves to other elements where various different properties of a product can be significant for different users.
Anders Partida Petersen, Product Manager at Sandberg A/S, says of this development:
“This is nothing we haven’t seen before. This is what happens every time new technology comes along. A multitude of manufacturers, and this also includes Sandberg, pitch the technology itself as the most crucial selling point when new technology is released. You do this to lure in the technophiles who are keen to buy new products as soon as they come out, and for whom the technology itself is important.”
The Product Manager continues:
“But only a short time later, mainstream users become interested, placing completely different requirements on design, functionality and user-friendliness. As well as the implicit expectation that the underlying technology should also be first rate.”
To satisfy mainstream users with USB 3.0 products, Sandberg has introduced a USB 3.0 Hub and a USB 3.0 card reader. Both products feature a superb, timeless design.
The Hub has a separate power supply to support power-hungry devices. In addition, each port is equipped with overload protection so that the computer’s output at the other end cannot be overloaded.
The card reader reads and writes an incredible variety of memory cards at absolute high speed. Built-in ports for even the smallest types of memory card make the card reader easier to use, and render the small adapters which are easy to lose obsolete.
